Land of a thousand stones
So yeah. Here’s a corner of the basement and the various bricks and stones that make it up. It’s a fun example of how many times this place has been changed.
This corner alone has:
- cinder blocks (the space is where an old well pump lived)
- red bricks
- gold bricks
- brown bricks
- mystery concrete
- limestone rock
Not to mention that it’s being held together by at least four different kinds of mortar. Limestone rock is the foundation for the main (original) part of the basement, and it’s interesting to see the materials that additions and repairs used throughout the years.
Of note, the space enclosed in cinder blocks was originally built to house a well pump for the well outside. There was/is a motor that runs the auto pump that pulls the water up. There’s still a manual gravity pump outside that can probably be unlocked and used if we ever have an issue or if a SHTF situation arises. Until then, city water works just fine.
That space will eventually be cleaned out, and will house a small air compressor and the shop-vac for the dust collection system that I’m going to start here soon. I already have roughed out the electric (rather than the random skinny romex that was drilled through the cinder block) and just need to sound-proof and build a little door. Fun.
